3 Things We Wished We Knew Before We Started Teaching
The instructors here at Ohio Technical College are masters in their field, coming from a diverse background and a variety of areas of automotive technology. Not only do most of them hold advanced degrees, they also have years of real-world experience to back them up. However, despite being fountains of seemingly endless knowledge, there are a few things they all wish they knew before they started teaching.
1) You’re not going to love every lesson that we teach.
While the automotive industry is fast paced and generally quite exciting, some lessons are going to be dry. No matter how enthusiastically we try to present it to you, some of you are going to have glazed eyes. As long as you learn the material, though, being a little bit bored is perfectly okay!
2) I don’t have to be best friends with all of my students.
As nice as it would be to immediately click and hit it off with all of my students, realistically that’s simply not possible. As your instructor, my job is to ensure that you learn the material. Deep down, though, we all want you to like us!
3) I can control the outcome of the lesson for the day.
Say, hypothetically that the material is dry today and I can tell that you’re getting bored. I’ve already accepted that we’re going to have to temporarily slog through today’s lesson, but the fact is, I’m the one leading the lecture. If I don’t like the direction it’s going, then I can always change direction to see if it can make it more engaging to make sure it actually sticks. At the end of the day, if you learn something new, then my lesson was a success.
Making the choice to become a student here at Ohio Technical College is one of the best decisions that you could make for your future. Never hesitate to reach out to us, even if you think your question is too simple or even too complex. No matter where you are in your academic progress, we want nothing more than your success.
